Housing Projects FAQ

1. What developments are being proposed for 417 and 425 Main Street?

The DOS has been fortunate to find two willing partners—the Eagle Valley Senior Citizens Housing Society and Habitat for Humanity Kamloops—to construct much needed attainable and affordable housing in the community

2. What project is being built by Eagle Valley Senior Citizens Housing Society?

The Eagle Valley Senior Citizens Housing Society project is a partnership with BC Housing to build 36 units of affordable housing on land owned by Eagle Valley Senior Citizens Housing Society (EVSCHS)and the District of Sicamous. This project is separately funded from the Shuswap Healing Centre and is also unrelated to Habitat for Humanity. It is a stand alone project.

3. Who is Habitat for Humanity Kamloops?

Habitat for Humanity Kamloops is a Habitat for Humanity Canada affiliate established in 2000. Its mission is “To mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting homeownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty.” Habitat for Humanity is known for partnering with families to provide home ownership. However, the organization also partners with local governments and non-profit societies, acting as a not-for-profit developer to build attainable housing developments in their community. In August, the organization approached the District to partner in building a residential-commercial development complex. The project is being proposed for the northern portion of 417 and 425 Main Street.

4: What project is being proposed by Habitat for Humanity Kamloops?

The proposed Habitat for Humanity Kamloops project will be a mixed-use housing project that will provide commercial space on the ground floor and attainable residential space on the upper floors. On November 10, 2021, Council authorized the Town Manager to execute a Memorandum of Understanding with Habitat for Humanity Kamloops to begin preliminary negotiations regarding the development of a residential-commercial project at 417, 425 and shared portion of 433 Main Street.

5. Why are the housing projects being located at 417 and 425 Main Street?

The EVSCHC project is being built adjacent to their existing facilities—The Haven, The Lodge and The Manor—and is an extension of existing offerings. In August, Habitat for Humanity Kamloops approached the District with a residential-commercial project that would provide Sicamous with much-needed housing stock. Council carefully considered both the Shuswap Healing Centre and the housing project in conjunction with the District’s land holdings, factoring the best use for each location. It was determined that housing with housing will create opportunities for shared parking and greenspace.

6. Will there be future public consultation?

Yes. The District is committed to creating an open dialogue with the public and will provide future consultation opportunities for the proposed project.
