Representatives appointed to Housing Committee: Inaugural Meeting set for March 3, 2022

March 1, 2022—Council and community representatives were recently selected to serve on the District of Sicamous Housing Committee which will provide input and recommendations to Council as it pursues the development of a Sicamous Housing Strategy.

The Housing Committee, a Standing Committee established by the Mayor, will be comprised of six members including three District councillors and three community members. Under the Community Charter, it is a requirement for at least half of the members to be Council members; the councillors appointed by Mayor Terry Rysz include Coun. Ryan Airey, Coun. Malcolm Makayev and Coun. Jeff Mallmes.

In November, the District issued a Call for Volunteers, seeking community representatives to fill the remaining Committee seats; one representative from the non-profit housing sector, one representative from the market housing sector, and one representative from the general community.

“I was pleased with the number of applications the District received,” said Mayor Rysz, noting 10 community members applied to the District. “I would like to thank everyone who took the time to apply and who shared their passion for the important issue of housing in our community.”

After careful consideration and review of the applications, residents Matt Baumgartner, Brenda Dalzell and Siobhan Rich have been selected to serve on the Housing Committee as representatives of the non-profit housing sector, the for-profit housing sector and the general community respectively.

The inaugural Housing Committee Meeting will take place Thursday, March 3, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. in Council Chambers at Municipal Hall (446 Main Street). During the initial meeting, the Committee Chair will be appointed, and the Committee will adopt its Terms of Reference which will determine the meeting schedule moving forward.

At future meetings, the Committee will review the Housing Needs Assessment Report recently conducted by CitySpaces Consulting, consider community perspectives on housing needs, and provide input and recommendations to Council regarding the development of a Sicamous Housing Strategy.

Housing Committee Meetings are open to the public and will be hosted electronically via ZOOM. Once the Housing Committee Meeting Schedule is determined, it will be shared with the public.
