General Biking Safety
-
Wear a helmet. It’s the law in B.C. and your best protection against head injuries.
-
Ride on the road, not the sidewalk. Sidewalks are for pedestrians. Ride in the same direction as traffic and keep to the right-hand side.
-
Obey all traffic signs and signals. Cyclists must follow the same rules as drivers.
-
Use hand signals to let others know when you’re turning or stopping.
-
Stay visible. Wear bright clothing and use lights and reflectors, especially at night or in low light.
-
Be alert and predictable. Make eye contact with drivers, shoulder check before changing lanes, and avoid sudden moves.
E-Bike/E-Scooter Etiquette & Safety
E-bikes are a fun and efficient way to get around, but they require extra awareness.
-
Be mindful of your speed. Slow down when approaching pedestrians, intersections or narrow pathways.
-
Yield to pedestrians. On shared paths and trails, give pedestrians the right of way and announce your presence with a bell and friendly “on your left.”
- Remember that e-dirt bikes are not permitted on municipal roadways. To learn more about the differences between e-bikes and e-dirt bikes, please read this News Post: E-Dirt Bikes Not Permitted on Roadways or in Public Areas
Cyclists, pedestrians and drivers all share responsibility for keeping our roads and trails safe. When we ride respectfully, everyone wins.
