Can shipping containers be permanently placed on a property?
Shipping containers can be super handy when used the right way. Whether someone is moving into a new home, tackling a big renovation, or managing a construction project, containers can offer short term storage and flexibility.
According to Zoning Bylaw No. 1100, 2024:
- Shipping containers are not permitted as an accessory building or use for more than 30 days in all zones, unless otherwise specifically permitted. These regulations are different for properties zoned commercial or industrial.
- Containers cannot be used as fencing, screening or advertising.
- Containers cannot be stacked more than two high.
- Containers cannot be placed in walkways, rights of way, easements or landscape buffer areas.
- Containers cannot take up required parking spaces, loading areas or landscaped areas.
- Containers must not block sight lines or sit within required setback areas.
