It's Fire Prevention Week! This year’s theme is “Charge Into Fire Safety," highlighting the dangers of lithium-ion batteries in the home and promoting the "Buy, Charge, and Recycle Safely" approach.
This year’s focus is on lithium-ion batteries — the kind found in smartphones, tablets, e-cigarettes, laptops, headphones, power tools, scooters and many other rechargeable devices in our homes.
While these batteries are powerful and convenient, if used incorrectly or damaged, they can overheat, catch fire or even explode. Here are some ways to ensure that you are doing your part to reduce the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries.
BUY safely:
- Choose products that have been tested by recognized safety labs.
- Avoid cheap, untested products sold online or in stores.
CHARGE safely:
- Only use the cords and chargers that came with your device (or approved replacements).
- Charge on a hard surface — never on a bed, couch or under a pillow.
- Unplug devices once they are fully charged.
RECYCLE safely:
- Never toss lithium-ion batteries in the garbage or blue bin — they can cause fires.
- Take them to an authorized battery recycling drop-off. Find a location near you: www.call2recycle.ca
Remember: Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere. Protect your home and family by handling them responsibly. For more information on Fire Prevention Week, please visit www.fpw.org.
