Inspired to help people at an early age by his father, who was a paramedic, Captain Steve Norton now brings 18 years of experience in fire service to Sicamous Fire Rescue.

Steve Norton joined Sicamous Fire Rescue two years ago with a background in service spanning three departments in British Columbia and Alberta. Recently, Steve was promoted to the rank of captain within the department, where he will act as a leader and focus on safety in the everyday operations of the hall.

Steve has specialized training as an emergency medical responder, hazardous materials technician and a safety instructor.

“Firefighters must have strong integrity, exceptional teamwork and a high standard of physical and mental fitness, all while being empathetic and putting others before yourself,” Steve shared when asked what qualities are most essential to his role. “Of course, being an adrenaline junkie doesn’t hurt as well,” he added.

Steve reflects on his years of service as experience that has made him a better person. He commented on his commitment to protect life, safety, property and the environment as a firefighter, and how his role as captain will enable him to promote fire safety and public education in Sicamous.

“Although the fire department responds to situations where people may be vulnerable or scared, Sicamous has proven time and time again that when something threatens one of our own, or in some cases the whole community, we always rally together to pull through,” says Steve. “It’s times like those when I am so proud to be a member of a small, strong and resilient community.”

Steve recognizes the importance of mentorship in the fire service and looks forward to passing on his knowledge to up-and-coming firefighters. He spoke of the importance of paying forward the knowledge his mentors imparted on him as a young firefighter.

 “Eighty-five per cent of Canada is protected by volunteer firefighters, which makes us part of the largest family in our country and the world,” Steve says, sharing his pride in being a part of the team at Sicamous Fire Rescue. “We work together as a well-oiled machine to provide an outstanding service to our residents.”

When asked what he enjoys most about serving the Sicamous community, Steve shared his appreciation for the support and respect that residents show the fire department. He is encouraged by interacting with families and individuals at events, describing the thanks Sicamous Fire Rescue receives as “just the cherry on top.”

Outside of his role at Sicamous Fire Rescue, Steve is the maintenance supervisor for Twin Anchors Houseboats. He enjoys spending time at the lake with his lovely wife and three-year-old daughter, playing hockey in the winter, and hunting and fishing when he can. All that said, Steve noted firefighting is his biggest hobby and the one he enjoys the most.
