FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 23, 2025 – The newly established Sicamous Ferry Society is preparing to set sail, offering a free pedestrian ferry service to transport residents and visitors between downtown (Finlayson Street), the Sicamous Beach Park and the beginning of the Shuswap North Okanagan Rail Trail. The first public voyage is expected to take place on July 2.

“We built this ferry with a vision to create yet another unique and memorable experience for anyone who explores our region,” says Mike Miltimore, the chair of the Sicamous Ferry Society. “It’s Sicamous craftsmanship with a purpose.”

The ferry service will operate on a continuous loop from the public boat launch at the west end of Finlayson Street to the Sicamous Beach Park and the rail trail. Operating daily, the initial hours of the service will be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Up to 12 passengers will be welcomed aboard per trip. The ferry is expected to operate until mid-September.

“We’re stronger together, and excited for this made-in-Sicamous ferry pilot project,” says District of Sicamous Mayor Colleen Anderson. “Sicamous will have a unique, fun, safe and reliable access to the Sicamous Beach Park and the rail trial, and we thank all those who made this possible for our community and visitors to enjoy.”

The new ferry service will provide safe access to key recreational areas this summer while construction continues on the Trans-Canada Highway at the R.W. Bruhn Bridge. While the existing sidewalk to the Sicamous Beach Park remains temporarily closed for pier construction, the ferry offers a practical solution.

This pilot project demonstrates what is possible when provincial and municipal governments, contractors and local businesses come together to solve challenges creatively. An inaugural run will take place in late June as part of system testing to prepare the ferry for public service on July 2.
