Ever wondered what it takes to become a firefighter? Multimedia journalist Heather Black recently got a behind-the-scenes look at Sicamous Fire Rescue's recruitment process! 

From the interview and written exam to the fire fit challenge and live fire scenario, Heather stepped into a recruit’s boots for the night.

We asked Heather to reflect and comment on her experience.

“I can now proudly add ‘smoke eater’ to my resumé after having joined Sicamous Fire Rescue as recruit for a behind the scenes look at firefighting. The crew helped me through putting out an actual fire in the burn building, something I never thought I could, or would, do. The crew gave me the knowledge, support and opportunity to prove to myself that I could do this thing that was so far out of my comfort zone I almost cancelled, but instead had the most exhilarating experience!”
